Where Does Home Design Begin?

Where does the design of a home start? Is it with a roof, a roughed out plan based on rooms or perhaps simply a color? A home is more than a physical space divided into sections. A home is a special place where you and your family can live and grow together for a lifetime.

Like any project the key is planning. A well designed home is designed with real people and real lives in mind. In the initial planning stages a designer is thinking not only about who they are designing for, but how will those people use the home. How often do they eat at home? How often do they have company? When they are entertaining how many people on average would they be entertaining and how would people flow from room to room?

Questions around who we are designing for during the conceptual stage, are of the utmost importance. There are many questions and they all need to be considered. As these questions get answered the fit, finish and materials start to take shape. Deciding on which materials to use based on style, durability and practicality is an entirely different exercise that is only possible if you really have a deep understanding of who the home is being designed for.

Designing a structure capable of housing a growing family is an honor. Those privileged enough to do so feel deeply connected to those homes as they have spent hundreds of hours thinking about every single aspect of the home. At Igloo we feel a deep responsibility to deliver on the promise of the lifestyle we envision for our clients. Professionally designed homes with big bright windows, kitchens that are a joy to cook in and open concept floor plans that make reasonably sized spaces look and feel much larger than they are. Perhaps most special of all is our use of advanced technology to ensure your lifestyle doesn’t negatively impact our shared environment.

Next time you are looking at a new home (whether it’s only new for you or newly built) think about the design of the home. There is no right or wrong - the question is does it work for you? Can you envision your family eating breakfast on the porch? Is there a spot for muddy boots on a rainy day, are the closets big enough, is the master close enough to the nursery should you have a little one in the house? Simply envisioning yourself in the home can make all the difference when it comes to making the right decision for you and your family. Good luck and happy house hunting!
